Glossary of Football Terms
Welcome to the official jayport glossary. When trying to understand football, it is important to understand some of the terms that I reference often throughout my posts. There are a ton of words, so to help your understanding, I have created a glossary where down below you will find several definitions for many of the most common football terms used today. Please note that this is an ongoing list so I will continuously be adding to it in the upcoming weeks.
The NFL Offseason
In this first section we will be covering terms related to the re-signing/franchise tag period & the start of the free agency period. It is important to note that most of these terms (which are periods) occur in a specific order. I will be providing the 2023 dates for when they happened/will happen for your reference.
Offseason
The offseason begins on March 15th at 4pm and goes until the new NFL season officially starts. During this time, there are no NFL games played meaning that teams are focused on improving their roster. There are 2 main ways to do this - the NFL free agency period & the NFL Draft.
Franchise Tag Period
Feb 21 - March 7
Right before the free agency period starts teams can make a last minute attempt to re-sign any players that have either rejected previous contract offers or don't want to come back to the team. If no deal is reached and the team really wants to keep the player, they can opt to franchise tag the player which keeps the player on the team for the next year. Typically, teams will only use tags on key players since the price ($) to keep them under the tag is very high. There are 3 different tags that can be placed on a player. The next 3 definitions will define the differences between those tags. All franchise tags have a length of 1 year.
Transition Tag
The transition tag gives the tagged player a 1 year deal in which the salary is either the average of the top 10 salaries of the player's position or 120% of the player's last year salary (whichever one is higher). However, the player can still negotiate with other teams. If another team offers a better contract, and the player's current team cannot match that contract, the player will sign with the other team.
Non-Exclusive Franchise Tag
This is the most common type of franchise tag used. The salary is the same as the transition tag except it takes into account the average of the top 5 salaries at the players position from last year, not top 10. Similar to the transition tag, the player has all rights to negotiate contracts with other teams. If the player's current team doesn't match the new contract offered by another team, the player will sign with the new team. Here is the difference: this time the player's former team will receive 2 first round picks as compensation.
Exclusive Franchise Tag
The exclusive tag is extremely rare. This is because the price is extremely high just for 1 year. It is similar to the non-exclusive franchise tag, but it uses the top 5 average salaries from this year, not last year. This is important because NFL contracts tend to keep getting more expensive as time goes on meaning the top 5 average salaries will be greater this year than the year prior. Under the exclusive franchise tag, the player has NO rights to negotiate with other teams (this is why it is called exclusive!).
Free Agency
March 15 @ 4pm
The free agency period starts when the new league years starts. While teams can negotiate with players before the official free agency period starts (called the legal tampering period - March 13 - March 15), the signings will be official only after the official free agency period starts. In the Free Agency period, all the players that have not been re-signed by their teams are able to negotiate contracts with new teams. This is one of the main 2 ways that teams will try to improve their roster during the NFL Offseason.
Trading Period
March 15 - Nov 1
No one really refers to this as the trading period but I thought it would be helpful for you to know when trading players or picks is legal. Trading can start when the new league year starts (4pm on March 15) and will go until November 1st (that was the 2022 trading deadline which could change in 2023). Trading is a way to improve a team's roster through either acquiring more talent or draft capital. This year (2023) we saw numerous impactful trades go down. In fact, they were so important I created a post analyzing all of them which you can find here.
